Two words: chocolate syrup. Keep those in mind as you read up about our newest branding adventure, The Beautiful Mess. When company owners/photographers Candice and Dan Lanning first came to us, they were in a different kind of mess – a branding mess. They had a great company, loved what they were doing, and were building a good reputation in the Charolette, North Carolina area, but Candice and Dan were in need of a branding makeover – something that matched the quality of their growing business. We’re so glad they decided to come to us!

From a designer perspective, we absolutely loved their name. It matched perfectly with their style and perspective towards photography. Candice and Dan see life as a “beautiful mess,” acknowledging the beauty of life’s imperfect moments; you know, the goofs and spills and tumbles that can make a photography session transform from something over-choreographed into something touchingly funny or moving. This is the very perspective that the husband and wife team wanted to communicate with their branding: the beauty of life’s unscripted moments.

Our challenge was to turn the idea of a “beautiful mess” into a complete brand. We also needed to incorporate Candice and Dan’s own ideas in regard to their branding – something modern, clean and clever. After some false starts in the drafting process, Ashley did what any girl would do … she turned to chocolate. Remember the chocolate syrup? Well, therein lies the secret to the new look for The Beautiful Mess. What more beautiful mess could there be than a chocolate syrup spill? Think about it – if you accidentally dribble a bit of chocolate syrup on the counter, you don’t go for the paper towels. Nope. You discreetly wipe it up with your finger and eat it … you know you do!

Turns out, Chocolate syrup makes for really beautiful abstract art as well. Check out a few behind-the-scenes photos of Ashley’s process. After a bit of trial and error, The Beautiful Mess‘ new branding look was complete. It’s a perfect fit for Candice and Dan’s company and their unique outlook on photography – a brand so delicious, you want to eat it up. Have a taste of The Beautiful Mess.

Robert Johnson is one of those clients made in branding heaven. His is one of those instances where his name, location and interest matched perfectly for his business. Okay, so the name – Robert Johnson. Sound familiar? Well, maybe not, unless you are a fan of the blues. Robert Johnson the musician is hailed as one of the great early pioneers of popular blues. Turns out, our Robert loves the blues AND he lives in Chicago, “Chi Town”–  a city known for many things, but most importantly hailed as one of the hot spots for some of the best blues around.

So, how does this all fit into his photography business? That has to do with Robert’s vision for his business as one that communicates his progressive, artistic approach to photography – a perspective accented with his appreciation for beauty of a vintage, photojournalistic style. For his design we wanted to create something that brought all of these elements together into something that not only identified the motivation behind Robert’s business, but incorporated something of Robert’s personality and interests as well.

The product: ROJO Foto Design. We used illustrated design elements – a stylish fedora, the playful cricket and a series of unique fonts – then we brought these elements into a look reminiscent of retro concert posters and fliers. We also included a collection of stylish patterns that serve as the foundation for ROJO’s overall branding identity. These central elements are carried over into the blog design and print materials. The overall look is stylish, creative and fun. It captures the most important aspects of Robert’s business and his personality.

Rebecca Devono wanted a brand that would blend classic sensibility with her passion for artistic photography. However, she was also looking for something fun and a bit playful. Like most of our clients, Rebecca’s personality is composed of quite a bit of depth (well, she is an artist). We wanted to create a brand that would capture all the dimensions of Rebecca and most of all, her business. We built her brand around a sophisticated logo then added brand elements/accents to give the overall look dimension. We also included some fun illustrations to underscore Rebecca’s playful side. These elements literally shine in Rebecca’s print materials. In all, the overall brand communicates her passion for her art and her mission to give clients something extraordinary.  We couldn’t have a client with goals more fabulous than that! At Luxecetera, our philosophy towards branding is built on the idea of meeting the needs of our clients. Sometimes that means starting from scratch; in other instances, we take an existing idea and make it better. In the case of husband/wife photographers, Seth and Neolle Nielson, our approach to their branding came in the form of the latter. Fishtale Photography as a brand was already a good idea. Built upon the premise of creating fantastic stories through photography, the Nielsons had created a brand message that was unique and fun; they just needed some help to better illustrate that vision through smart design. That’s where we came in, taking their concept about photography as a vehicle for storytelling and translating it into clean, sophisticated design elements. We created a design that honed in on the whimsical nature of a “fish story” (isn’t the tail cute!) and carried that over into every detail of the design – a bubble-inspired pattern, wave accents, and fish/whale silhouettes. These design elements coupled with a color pallet appropriate for a “whale of a brand,” resulted in a good branding idea made great. So, pull up a chair and join us for some real Fishtales.

Project List: logo design, brand elements, tagline development, pattern design, watermark, business cards, letterhead, notecard, pricesheet, livebooks website design.

The focus for Janelle Joy, the artist, is capturing life in natural light. It is a very colorful, organic approach to photography and the keystone for Janelle Joy Photography. The focus for Janelle Joy, the businesswoman, is providing her clients with a unique and enriching photographic experience – during the session itself and after, when they look back at Janelle’s work. These were the guiding principles when we began developing a new brand for Janelle Joy Photography. Her love of natural light inspired our use of clean, bright color and the appearance of flora-inspired design elements throughout her overall branding package. Like her work, Janelle was looking for something classy and timeless that fit with her personal philosophies on art, business and life. In the end, we were able to give Janelle a lasting brand that transcended trends and instead provided her with a look and feel that can “grow” with her business.

Ann Westerman has a lot of love. She loves her children (her inspiration). She loves photography. And she loves her clients. Ann wanted to communicate this love for family and photography in her new brand, Ann Westerman Photography. There are a lot of ways to communicate love, but it was Westerman’s focus on family and children’s photography that really inspired the design cornerstone of her brand. The result is an image that represents a loving embrace – a heart serving as the focal point. The colors are clean, warm hues of blue, red and chocolate. These design elements are tied together by a telling phrase: “the art of family.” For Ann Westerman, business is about more than just taking great photographs – it’s creating meaningful, artistic representations of the people and moments most important to her clients. She sees the art of family in her own life and in the lives of her clients. We are glad to welcome Ann to our family and introduce our newest brandings story. Presenting, Ann Westerman Photograpnhy.

The start of a new project is always an exciting endeavor at Luxecetera. More intriguing, are those projects that also present new challenges. Cass Comerford presented just such a challenge when she came to us looking for a branding makeover for her “photography/blog/internet marketing/personl” business/website. Yeah, say that three times fast … while patting your head and rubbing your tummy. As Cass put it, “my business is me.” Her site is truly an ethnographic study of seemingly infinite depth. It is all at once introspective, analytical, exploratory and artistic. Cass’ site, Cass Just Curious, is a platform for her budding photography business, a philosophic outlet for her observations on motherhood, photography, professionalism and everyday life, and a running epistle to her daughter, 1-year-old Lexi. This was a very unique project for us, to say the least. From a design perspective, Cass was looking for something clean and simple – something honest, “what you see is what you get. But not sterile or too rigid.” Her tendency toward self-exploration led her to a design concept that really was what she needed. We won’t say that it was “easy,” but her wants fit her needs. The resulting branding concepts are driven by Cass’ own personality and philosophy. A clean, classic script-based logo, a design element taken from a work of stained glass from Cass’ home and a feminine color pallet suggested by Cass herself, all came together perfectly to represent Cass Just Curious. Just as Cass has made it her mission to illuminate her life and the life she observes, we worked hard to create a design that illuminated Cass’ vision for her business – brought her ideas to light. Welcome to Cass Just Curious: Life, Illuminated.

Projects Include: Branding, logo, tagline creation, watermarks, business card, notecards, custom Dream Album cover, custom blogsite and HTML newsletter.
